The Incongruous CityMrs L sees and hears it on the streets of ManhattanMonday, August 18th A well-dressed guy comes up to me on the corner and starts in on an articulate, detailed and compelling story about how he is a designer who got locked out of his apartment and he needs ten dollars to….. "Wait a minute," I said. "This sounds really familiar. Oh, I know! You came up to me on this same corner two years ago and told me the same story!" He abruptly turned and walked away. previous | next | back to main page |

Maybe it is time to move to West Virginia… and back to your country roots. No fancy beggars, no women wearing Prada and no one flossing their teeth… at least in public.

Awww, see now, this is a really good sign for all of us Rosanne fans who are repeat offenders like me who always try to meet you and shake your hand once every 2 - 3 years after your concerts - you really DO remember us!!

If the guy’s still using that spiel after two years, it must be working for him. Do you think he pays his rent this way?
I hope you write a song about him.

It would bre awful it this came to fruition, but what about “grooming gone wild?” Could there be anything worse than “Girls Gone Wild?” Your song with Kristofferson and Costello was like a dream come true. I was going to say it was like a “poem” but then it truly was a poem. I seriouly considered flying East somewhere a few years ago when you and Kristofferson both performed. We are nearly the same age and have shared similar life events and there have been times when your music has sustained me. I hope the 14.99 I shelled out over the years has helped you.

I definitely like to help people who have temporarily fallen on hard times and who are working to get their lives back on track, but I really don’t want to support anyone who makes a career out of begging. Years ago New York Magazine did an article about several of these people which showed how INCREDIBLY lucrative it was to beg rather than actually having a job and paying taxes on the money.
Once you give to one of these leeches and you see them pulling the same scam again, you end up feeling used and get jaded rather quickly.
I could rant on and on but I have my own blog to do that in.

On the Q train one night a man got on and asked the train for money as he needed 15 dollars for a permit so he could start his job on Monday. He had his social security card and only needed a few more dollars to make his 15.00. He exited at the next stop.
At that next stop, another man got on and asked for 15.00 as he also was starting a new job on Monday and needed the money for a room. He showed the train his social security card etc. I informed him that a guy just left the train who also needed the 15.00 dollars for a new job.
He told me that the first guy stole his story and thanked me as it explained why he didn’t get as many donations as he expected.
Go figure!

You see? One does NOT need television to experience the sheer nuttiness of humanity. I love the blog!
This is a great opportunity for me to say that I’ve listened to “Black Cadillac” approximately one million times, and still appreciate it. The same can be said about the million spins of “The Wheel” since 1993. Superb, superb!
And I will also take this opportunity to once more beg you, Rosanne, to come to Portland, Maine. Merrill Auditorium awaits!

P.S. Thank you for speaking out against the use of your father’s name in connection with a horrible political campaign. The nerve!
